If you’ve ever stared at your overdue invoices and wondered whether you’ll ever actually see the money, then you’re not alone. Late payments are one of the most frustrating and damaging realities of freelance life—you probably know that already through experience. But things are apparently about to change. The UK government has introduced what it’s calling the toughest crackdown on late payments in over 25 years, and if you’re a freelancer like me, it’s worth paying attention.

Before we get into the changes that are coming, let’s acknowledge how serious this issue is for small and microbusiness owners like us. Stats show late payments cost the UK economy around £11 billion every year. Around 38 businesses close every single day because they simply can’t survive waiting to be paid. And if you’re a freelancer or sole trader, you already know that one big unpaid invoice creates a chain reaction—you delay paying a supplier, you dip into your VAT reserves, your cash buffer disappears, your VAT bill arrives, you’re snookered.

Late payment is genuinely dangerous for your business. It destroys cash flow and cash flow problems is the number one killer of small businesses.

So let’s look at what’s happening, what it means for you and me, and what we should be doing right now.
